How has SCIENCE / TECHNOLOGY affected the Civil Rights movement?

30 December, 20:57, by admin

I’m interested in knowing any lowly known facts about how Science/technology affected the Civil Rights movement in America.

Best Answer goes to…the best answer!

The television played the biggest part. People could see Malcolm X and King on tv talking about what African-Americans wanted and what they were being denied. People could see the images of the children being sprayed by the police. The Edmond-Pettus bride and Bloody Sunday that took place in the 60s. James Meredith attempting admission into the Ole Miss. The Little Rock 9. Those images and more really shaped the country.

The printing press. Jet magazine showed the photo of Emmitt Till and that image really shocked American back in 1955.

The telephone. The phone played a part in the movement. Calling people to assemble..

Radio and music also played a part.

J. Edgar Hoover and his goons using wiretaps to tap into Martin Luther King’s home and used this info to intimidate him and others in the civil rights movement. Others civil rights leaders were wiretapped as well.

The science aspect of this is recently they opened up cases from the past. Like they dug up Emitt Till’s body (I think) and Medgar Evers body to determine how they were killed and to prosecute. The four little girls that were killed in that church bombings assembling and determining who was at fault. They are opening up cases from the civil rights past to prosecute.

How do Muslims explain the loss of Islamic civilization’s former leadership in fields of science & technology?

29 December, 06:41, by admin

Islamic civilization was at its height when much of Europe was living in primitive living conditions, very low literacy rates, and doing little more than surviving. Why is Islamic civilization no longer regarded as leading the world in science, technology, architecture, art, and mathematics? What happened?

Mandates and Politics

Europe used the Muslim worlds discoveries to make itself great, like Abu Bakr II’s discovery of America, Averroes secularism, and all of its mighty new inventions such as the astrolabe or the various mechanics.

In short European Kingdoms did to the Muslim world what they did to Africa, Asia, South and North America.

They pitted local people against one another and made promises they never kept. Political issues of today are result of these very promises. A pan-Arab state was never created, Ottomans and Safavids tore each other apart rather than focusing on outer enemies, they gave Palestine to the Jews right in the center of the Arab World, they divided the Arab world into Mandates rather than one united nation, smaller nations are less of a threat to the European lands. (Think of each state in the united states being made a separate country, think of all the problems that would cause to our scientific advancement)

The thoughts are still there, we just need a revival, however the world politics of the middle east prevent this from happening.

Why do religious people get upset when I talk about the beginning of the universe & technology/science?

28 December, 03:38, by admin

Earlier today, I brought up the subject of the advancement of science & technology as well as the beginning of the universe. The person I was talking to got upset and said that our future should be determined by God and not by science or technology. They also said that if I truly believed in God, I would only believe what the bible says. But science makes lots of sense in terms of validity, replication, experimentation, etc. Why can’t I believe in both science and God?

Real Christians don’t think or talk that way. This person was a member of one of the fundamentalist cults. He/she has been indoctrinated into a religious ideology that demands a total surrender of self to the dictates of whatever cult leader has him/her in thrall.

As for the Bible part–I do know the Bible–and these poor souls honestly don’t realize that what they’ve been indoctrinated with does not come from the Bible–and don’t know that what they’ve been told about science is mostly wrong.

Here’s a couple of examples, just to make the point:

1) the Bible does not give any date for the creation of Earth (much less that it was 6000 years ago)
2) Darwin’s work was not attacked by Christians when it was published–it was welcomed because it gave insight as to how God went about bringing life to its current stage of development.
3)John Calvin–one of the great leaders of the Reformation–condemned those who tried to "take the Bible literally"–pointing out that Genesis, in particular–was written in terms (i.e. metaphor) that the people of the time couldgrasp.

There is no comflict between science and religion–as long as you remember tha tmuch of the Bible (or other faith’s religious texts) are metaphors intended to convey spiritual/moral truths, not literal renditions of events.

BTW–the converse is also true. You see people running around claiming "science disproves religion." That is false. Science deals only with empirical (measurable) realities. It does not deal with or have anything to say about morality or spirituality. Those are matters of philosophy and religion, not science. Both sorts of ideas are valid–in their proper context.

Does current Science technology measure the orbit of planets accurately?

26 December, 22:49, by admin

In past, people tried very hard to measure the orbit of planets based on observation, math and geometry without much accuracy. Nowadays, can our Science technology measure the orbit of planets accurately enough for a long period? The orbit of planets are affected by other planets with different weighting in 3-D, and there are many unknown planets in Universe, which cause any unknown gravity forces from a unknown distance. With current Science technology, do we simply predict the orbit of planets within a limited period [such as 100 years] by fitting an existing orbit of each planet? [Curve Fit] If any error occurs, then do we simply make some adjustment on existing curve of orbit? I would like to know what kinds of Science Technology we currently have to track the orbit of planets accurately. Do we have a true formula to measure the orbit of planets accurately for the next million years? Could anyone tell me how to reply someone’s answer for more interpretions on my post? Thank you

The Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) has a "long" ephemeris that covers the years 3000 BC to 3000 AD, and a regular ephemeris for the years 1600 to 2200.

The accuracy is *very* good. Take Mars, for example: we can back-predict the year 1600 position within 20 kilometers, and predict the year 2200 position within 8 kilometers. For the current years, the accuracy is better than 1 km for the 4 inner planets.

The main reason for errors is the gravity perturbations of many asteroids whose masses are not well known.

For orbits over millions of years, we can predict the shape of the orbit very well, but not at all where the planet is on the orbit.

How does Science technology affect life?

26 December, 09:07, by admin

My teacher asked me to write how science technology afeects my life. Im just not too suree what she means by science technology… What classifys as Science tech. Please someone help ASAP!

Anything developed using scientific procedures qualifies as science technology. This could be something like the computer you used to ask this question to the refrigerator that keeps your food from getting stale to the medicine your doctor prescribes.

Fashionable Technology

A massage-based video game controller, panties with wings and an inflatable dress were just a few of the concepts exhibited recently at the NYC gallery Eyebeam to launch Sabine Seymour’s new book “Fashionable Technology.” In this video, we interview Sabine about the burgeoning field and her lifelong obsession with fashion. She also helps us peruse the exhibit, chatting with the designers and artists behind each piece to learn about their inspiration and process.

Is there a difference between dating white men and hispanic?

25 December, 14:34, by admin

I’ve never noticed that much difference. But, a friend of mine says they are vastly different in the way they treat women. Am i missing something?

Yes there is…

Hispanics well… They tend to be the ladies man, they are very seductive, they play a lot, rarely they take things seriously and sometimes they just dont give a huuu haaa about what you think.
Sometimes there the sweetest things and are VERY passionate lovers ;-) . They tend to get bored easily so youre always trying new things.

I’m White and dating a Hispanic man, can I fit in with his family?

22 December, 20:51, by admin

I’m a white 37 year old woman, dating a Hispanic 24 year old man. Everything in our relationships is WONDERFUL……. except for the fact the I don’t speak spanish. When we are with his family (which is a lot) they mostly speak spanish. I feel left out and stupid. sometime I leave the table after dinner while everyone is talking, or i just sit there feeling like an idiot. I’m trying to learn spanish now but it’s gonna take a while before I can participate in their conversations. Any Suggestions??? Is this relationship gonna work??

your relationship will do fine…face it you’re gonna feel uncomfortable for a while, because you dont quite fit in but you’ll get used to it sooner or later…i had to go through the same thing but now i dont feel so left out anymore you just gotta pay attention to what they say in spanish and ask your boyfriend what they are talking about and you’ll get the hang of it …. i hated being in that situation so i’ll wish you the best

22 December, 08:01, by admin

If someone that is Hispanic dates someone that is white, is that considered interracial?

Yes, that is an interracial relationship. An African American with a Caucasian is considered interracial. Two people of different ethnicity that are together, that is interracial.

Am I the only Hispanic guy dating a Asian Girl?

20 December, 01:39, by admin

Howdy, I live in a very diverse area, the San Francisco Bay Area to be specific, and im not trying to be racist or stereotypical or anything of the sort. It’s just that, everywhere I look, there are mixed couples, and couples that stick with their own ethnicity. But, in my entire life, I have never seen another couple, in which a Hispanic guy is dating a Asian girl, let alone a Hispanic and Asian dating. Am I really the only one in this case, or am I not looking hard enough. Also, to add to it, everywhere we go, even in San Francisco, we tend to get starred at continuously. I’m just very curious, that’s all. Also, if anyone is wondering, I am Mexican, my girlfriend is Vietnamese.

My boyfriend is Mexican, I’m Asian. "We" aren’t alone..lol. I hadn’t really paid much attention to being an interracial couple until a car salesman told us he had never seen a Hispanic with and Asian. Oh yeah, we met in La Jolla, California…of all places! If you haven’t been there, it’s not really the most diverse town. =D
